Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect in my first session?
Your first few sessions will consist mainly of history gathering. You will spend time talking about your family, education, relationships, work, who you are, what you've been through, and what you've survived. I will be asking general and direct questions, in addition to open-ended questions to learn more about patterns that may be contributing to your troubles. You will then explore what goals you would like to accomplish and together we will work to come up with the best program for you that is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based for you to reach those goals.
I will follow up with an email that will include the program best to get you started along with a gift that I will send to you which will include the supplies you need.
How long is a therapy session?
A therapy session is 45-50 minutes typically once a week. A family and couples session is 60-90 minutes once a week.
What happens if I can't make my session?
I understand that things happen. Please give at least 24-hour notice if you are unable to keep your scheduled session. If time permits, we will reschedule within the same or following week. If you no-call, no-show more than once (you get one freebie) or cancel the same day of session, a 50 percent cancellation fee will be charged. If the session is canceled due to therapist reasoning, you will not be charged for the session.
How long does therapy take before I see some results?
The answer to this question is based on your participation and readiness for change. If you are consistent and motivated to put in the hard work it takes to function in this ever-changing world, then expect to see changes in the way you think, feel, and behave. If you have expectations that you can change the way others think, feel, and behave or have expectations that I can "fix" or "save" you, then expect results to take longer than expected. Being that we work with the arts there is great satisfaction and awareness that typically gives immediate results.
Do I need art supplies?
The Arts are vast. We dive into what your needs will be once we have our first development session. I will send you files and supplies for explorative projects that we will use to get to the root of what led you here.
What is Trauma Attachment Disorder?
Trauma Attachment Dis-Order (TAD) is by definition an emotional shock following a stressful event, series of events, or a physical injury, which may be associated with physical shock and many times leads to long-term neurosis. It will be the result of mental, physical and sexual abuse as well as neglect and abandonment. TAD often leads to a “disoriented- disorganized” attachment. It is a consistent disruption of physical and emotional safety in the family system. It is not what happens to you, but what happens inside you.
We separate the word dis-order because we want to bring order back. We don’t want to remain attached to and protect our disorder allowing it to become a crutch. This is not a disease, it's a disorder. It doesn’t have to be permanent. By visually separating the prefix we are disconnecting from the disorder as a reminder that we are taking back the power to restore our minds and establish order from the internal chaos we may feel.
How effective is using art as therapy?
Using art as therapy was acknowledged and embraced as an effective and useful therapy in the late 1940s by
Margaret Naumburg, an American psychologist, educator, artist and author, and founder of the Walden School of New York City. Shortly after this success the pharmaceutical company hijacked the medical industry and started crippling the mental state of society by stripping the hope of recovery from those who were suffering.
Art therapy has shown incredible improvements in those who suffer from much of what we experience in today’s world. I look forward to introducing you to this amazing tool that once you learn how to use; you will become unstoppable. If you so desire.
